I have a descent pc i73930k gtx670 so on but when I open files and launch applications it's really slow even my boot times are awful so I was wondering is my hard drive bottlenecking my whole system and if so should I invest in a ssd?

Solution
Also hard drives come in different speeds :p eg if you have a 5200 rpm one, youd see massive improvement going to 7200 rpm or 10000rpm. Or there are hybrid drives that will compromise speed and cost, or full solid state, seagate do decent ones and crucial and mushkin etc

The things the HD affect are application load times, boot times, file reads, etc... Once most applications are loaded, however, the drive you are using has little effect on the performance (like in games...may take a while to load, but once loaded the HD does not affect framerates). So if you want to see faster performance in these situations an SSD could be the answer.

There are some pretty good deals on ssd's now too...I switched to SSD's a couple years ago, and will never go back! :)

As drtoast said, there are quite a few options out there. As for ssd's I would recommend, I have used OCZ vertex 2's, vertex 3's, agility 3's, vertex 4's, crucial m3's ,m4's, and samsung ssd's. All have been good. Personally I would go for the Crucial or Samsungs though. Fewer firmware issues :) (I have had many issues with my OCZ drives...)

I don't know a ton about hybrid drives, but I know some people who use and like them.

Edit: Crucial M4's and Samsung 840's are excellent drives. Those are the ones I would recommend (from my personal experience...I'm sure there are many other good ones out there though)

Don't use mollex adapters with your hdd, make sure the hdd is on a clean cable line from the psu and not coupled with internal fans or other devices unless it's another hdd of the same brand and type (v/a).
