hello

i am new to this forum, need some help with my old hard drive which is about to die because its making strange noises and the getting stuck all the time.
i am using windows 7 64 bit.

is it possible to copy the operating system with all the registry setting so to avoid reinstalling other programs. if yes how can i do that
also how can i copy the datas as well.
do i have reactivate windows 7

any help will be highly appreciable
thanks

Most drive makers offer cloning software to copy the old drive to the new one, but you must take care to select the right drives.

Also if the old drive is locking up, the software may fail to copy.

If you can clone it, chances are Windows will not ask for a reactive, but even if it does it only takes a few seconds online.

Windows 7 has a backup feature. What you will do is make an image of your current drive. You will then install the image on the new drive. It will be an exact clone of the old dive. Everything all files, settings, software, data, the works. Once the image is mounted on the new drive, you will disconnect and remove the old dive. The last thing will be to reset the drive letter to C in disc management. Check out this guide (http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/4241/how-to-create-a-system-image-in-windows-7/).

oh yeah i forgot about this haven't really used windows in a while that would be the best option :)

you want to clone the drive to a new good one. This makes a copy you can swap in with no impact. HOWEVER if the drive is at risk make important backups first. Then do the clone. There are LOTS of free programs to do this, but I've had pretty good experience with easeus free programs and they seem user friendly for new users.

I never use the Window built in one, but a huge +1 for mentioning it. I will certainly try it at some point in the future.

disaster has struck. i was going to clone the hd, but when i switched on the pc, it just goes to error recovery page and keeps going on in a loop
there are two options in that page
1. repair(recommended)
2. start windows normally

none of them works, system keeps rebooting itself
is it too late

Things are getting quite bad.

I think at this point you are going to be just as good installing Windows on the new drive and then trying to get any of your files off after. Disconnect the current drive while installing Windows if you go this path.

If you do NOT have a DVD, you can download a copy of Win7 here. These images come with no key(COA), so you will need to use your key(COA) from the current system.

If you have an Intel based board, ensure you install the Intel Rapid Storage Manager as it can give you an earlier warning of drive failure.
