Computer cases are... cases. Metal boxes with fans that cool and organize your PC. I don't see much innovation happening in this area, but everybody I know uses cases that look so new and shiny. Why is this trend happening?

As long as you need it to. They don't deteriorate like the components it houses.

They last about three hundred years, longer if you don't use them :)

There are innovations in computer cases mostly in reducing noise, improved cooling and wire management. Also cases change to house the changes in the systems. With 4TB hd how many need 8 to 12 hd bays. Cases need 2 to 3 ssd mounts. Most importantly a new systems needs a shiny new case.

It all depends on the person. Some like all the bells and whistles, some like the looks, some like the functionality and some don't give a rat's behind. It comes down to what you want from your case and at what point it no longer serves that purpose.

They last until the Gods bring out a new motherboard layout standard. Something beyond the various ATX sizes.

Other than that, there are (IMHO) three reasons for changing:
1. You bought a crap one initially and want to change
2. You bought a non-compliant one (pre-built machine) and want to change
3. Vanity

Ok....4. You want to sell the current thing as is and buy new.

Good, I was worried that somebody was going to tell me that cases actually rot after the expiration date or something wacky like that.

Just to add, some late rmodel cases do come with plastic fittings, they may become brittle over a period of time, might get damaged or split or break if the PC case is mis-handled or dropped. Even some plain PC cases do tend to bend in ways when manually "booted" (with your boot!) and also do tend to get a rattle between the joint fittings or if the PSU is too big for is mounting and touches the inside part of the case (some have stick on tabs so that the PSU does not touch the inside area).

Some PC cases do tend to go rusty when subjected to water, dust accumulation can also make the tin of the PC case deteriorate, and some solvents used to erase marking pen markings on the case either on purpose or by a child, can cause discoloration and unsightly marks on the outer covering.
