I am having trouble with my IDE cable. I went the cheaper route because I didn't have alot of money(Don't say avoid IDE at all costs, sata is the only way to go because sata is not the only way and IDE still works fine). I got my CPU and was ready to start my PC up. I started it and My hdd didnt appear on the boot menu so I unplugged the cable and put in a new one thats not long enough to reach the optical drive and HDD so I just plugged in the hdd. It worked so I tried to connect bothe devices with the cable and I did but it said the hard drive was not on the boot menu so I unplugged it again and only plugged the hdd and it works fine now. My question is how many devices can be connected to my mobo: Asrock 760gm-gs3? (Sorry for the long story)

It sounds like you may have a jumper settings conflict. Is there a jumper available for the HDD or is it missing? First set the optical drive to master and try again.

What does the indicator on the HDD say about the no-jumper setting? Is it master, slave, CS? I can't tell without knowing the model. If no jumper = master then the ODD will have to be slave.

The HDD is a western digital caviar 250gb model number : WD2500PB-19FBA0. I'm not sure what the indicator is.

By indicator I meant the diagram describing which jumper alignment correspond to which setting. The picture on this page shows it right on the front

No jumper means the HDD is set to MASTER, so the optical drive must be slave
