Deletion of second instance of OS

Hi all, for various reasons, I installed a second instance of XP on my Dell (clean install on a new partition). Before I did that I cloned my original partition from C: to D: and set a dual OS option at start up. I am now ready to wipe the original XP and work entirely off the subsequent XP install. My question is, can I simply format the D: drive (which contains the original and no longer required XP version)? I have backed up all data I wish to retain off my D: drive.
