I am running Windows 7 Ultimate and just replaced 2GB of RAM with 4GB and was surprised when I looked at usage figures as it seems to have been swallowed up already and I've not got the 'slack' in the system I was expecting.

Typical figures are:

Hardware Reserved 898
In Use 1344
Modified 54
Standby 1793
Free 7

Available 1800
Cached 1847
Total 3198
Installed 4096

In list of processes, the top one (by far!) is svchost.exe (netsvcs) with 319,320 committed.

Does this look reasonable or am I still short of memory?

Thanks!

Not at all that surprising to be honest. Since Windows 7 with all of it's crap alone is going to fill up 2GB. Besides you have 1800 available :) . But this looks normal dude. Also if your windows is not 64bit. It will not see the entire 4GB but 3.6 or so.

Bear in mind the cached memory isn't actually "in use" per se. It's just that Windows, instead of leaving it unused, caches some information there that might have to be loaded at some point. That helps performance.

OK, thanks for replies. Seems like the situation is OK and, indeed, the PC 'feels' like it is running quicker.

So, I can rest easy (until next problem!)
