My friend is looking to upgrade his HPE-130f model computer, which research tells me is a mid size case. He is going to buy my Radeon HD 5850, which means he needs to upgrade the 350 watt PSU inside. Any suggestions for power supplies?

For a system using a single Radeon HD 5850 graphics card AMD specifies a minimum of a 500 Watt or greater system power supply. The power supply should also have a maximum combined +12 Volt continuous current rating of 28 Amps or greater and have at least two 6-pin PCI Express supplementary power connectors.

Total Power Supply Wattage is NOT the crucial factor in power supply selection!!! Sufficient Total Combined Continuous Power/Current Available on the +12V Rail(s) rated at 45°C - 50°C ambient temperature, is the most critical factor.

Overclocking of the CPU and/or GPU(s) may require an additional increase to the maximum combined +12 Volt continuous current ratings, recommended above, to meet the increase in power required for the overclock. The additional amount required will depend on the magnitude of the overclock being attempted.

Not knowing what the other major power drawing item in the PC is (the CPU), I will assume a 140W since that is about the largest wattage one I can think of that may have been put in that model PC. The HD 5850 is a 151W Max TDP card. That relates to 12.6A on the +12V rail and needs 2 x 6 pin PCIe power connectors. A 145W CPU will max out at about 12A on the +12V rail.

If you want a good quality PSU that won't break the bank, look at the 530W to 600W Rosewills: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007657%2050002177%20600014021&IsNodeId=1&name=Rosewill

If you want to spend more, look at Seasonic, Corsair, XFX, FSP, Antec: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007657%20600014021&IsNodeId=1&bop=And&Order=RATING&PageSize=20
