I am having really frustrating problems with my pc, i can barley play games on it because i get VERY unstable FPS when playing ANY games, even indie and 2D games. I really need someone to help diagnose the problem because i have spent quite alot of money on this PC. i can play battlefield 3 on high/ultra settings and get about 45 FPS but my fps will frequently drop down to about 25 for a split second then go back up to 45 again. This frustrating problem is causing major lag spikes

My specs:
AMD radeon hd 6870 vtx 1GB GDDR5 about a year old never OC.
AMD phenom II X4 965 Black Edition processor @ 3.4Ghz no OC.
Windows 7 64-Bit
16gb ram @ 1333 Mhz
1TB hard drive
600w alpine gold PSU

please help urgently i do not want to pay for special help.:fou:

kind regards

Toby

what i would do is download the latest driver.
download driver fusion.

uninstall ALL amd software using catalyst installer and do not restart when prompted.

run driver fusion to clean away any AMD driver remnants then restart.

install the latest driver as custom, only install the required stuff and the display driver and hdmi audio, dont install catalyst control centre or any of the sdk stuff etc and restart if prompted.

hopefully magic and pixie dust.

Try running with Task Manager open, to take a look at CPU load. It may be bottlenecking things. If so, you could improve things by overclocking it.

Also, I'm not impressed with the PSU, but at least it's unlikely to be the culprit here.

The graphics driver may also be worth a look.

I almost guarentee it is RAM related. Check your BIOS to ensure it has set the correct voltage, timings, and speed for the RAM. When installing drivers ONLY go to the manufacture's website and download the lastest there. Do not let Windows Update install them, do not use any 3rd party software. Take the extra 10-15 minutes to do it yourself.

Can you please explain to me how to do this, i know how to get into the BIOS but i do not see anything wrong, all of the voltage settings are all set to AUTO and optimised settings?

What do you think i should overclock? and also i have all of the latest drivers for my system. And also could a CPU that bottlenecks the GPU really cause fluctuating fps and lag spikes.

If the CPU is bottlenecking, you could improve things by overclocking it. Whether it is bottlenecking can be ascertained by checking the CPU load.

I just ran battlefield 3 at high settings and monitored the GPU and CPU usage and performance, it looks like the CPU is spiking, something that i do not understand is that even at the lowest resolution and lowest settings the CPU still spikes?

The CPU load isn't affected much by resolution - more pixels means more work for the GPU, not the CPU. Settings often don't affect the CPU either, or in some cases higher settings can actually reduce the CPU load by moving some tasks from the CPU to the GPU.

I tested it on maxed out settings Battlefield 3 and the lag spikes were less frequent and not as violent, i suspect that my processor is causing the problem. I do not see why it would do that though because it isnt even a year old, i got it december 2012. What do you suggest i do?

Well, the Phenom II x4 965 was actually launched back in 2009, they have just kept selling it for a very long time.

There aren't any major CPU upgrades available that would be compatible with your motherboard, so your options for improving CPU performance are either to overclock your CPU or to replace your motherboard and get a faster CPU. That would be relatively expensive.
