I'm building a PC for use at my workplace, where I will be doing a lot of work in Cinema 4d. I've landed on the E5-2687W chip for a balance between clock speed and cores needed to minimize rendering time. I was going to use the Asus P9X79-E WS motherboard, but after a recent visit to the product page, the 2687 is not listed as a supported CPU.

https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P9X79E_WS/#support_Support_CPU_Intel%20Xeon%20E5-2670%20%282.6G,L3:20M,8C,rev.C2%29

Since I'm dealing with some pricey components here, I'm not in a position to take any chances. Anyone have any knowledge as to whether or not this motherboard is truly compatible? Any other suggestions for a good quality motherboard for this CPU?

Thank you all in advance!

Since there are no BIOS update for that P9X79-E WS, big chance is that your 2687w will run into troubles there. Better stick to boards that do support it by default. Asrock and Gigabyte' X79 boards do this very well, you should consider one of them. Here's a short list of those boards ( used the filter to show boards with 8 RAM slots only ) : http://pcpartpicker.com/parts/motherboard/#m=7,14,18&s=21&sort=a6&n=8

I discovered there's another version of this Motherboard - the P9X79 WS (no -E), that DOES list the 2687w as a supported CPU. The cost is $100 less, but the user feedback on Newegg is not as favorable as the P9X79-E WS. Alot more reviews, but a lot more problematic reviews as well. All I have to base my decision are the specs and reviews. None of the boards seem "perfect"... I might go with the P9X79 WS, unless someone can suggest a better alternative.

Different board, I see. According to user's review then all the problems only happened with P9X79 WS bought in early-mid 2012 except for 1 guy who bought it in late 2012 and got a board with faulty audio panel, RMA-d and Asus sent back another faulty one ( blame their customer support service this time ). Reviews in 2013 show this board doing good, so I don't think old problems with this board still exist right now.
