My laptop recently ran into an issue and now I can't boot it at all. I try running a boot scan (the one Windows 7 recommends) and it loads into what appears to be Safe Mode, and then goes to a black screen with a mouse cursor on it, and then stays like that until you turn off the computer.

I tried starting it in "Safe Mode with Command Prompts", and it starts to load files, but then freezes and then reboots itself after showing the following command:

Loaded:/windows/system32/DRIVERS/avgidsha.sys

Can someone please help? There is a large amount of important data on this hard drive!

Additional Details:
Computer is a Toshiba Satellite L655

The OS is Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

Edit--
Even More Details:
When I start, the Toshiba logo shows up, and then it directs me to a screen giving me the selection options as follows:

"Run Boot Scan (recommended)
Start Windows Normally"

I do own the Toshiba recovery Discs, but I would like to avoid wiping everything from my hard drive

I cannot access any mode of Windows on the computer, including Safe Mode and Safe Mode with Command Prompts

I have a installation disc, but it was the one I used on my custom-built desktop, the laptop came with Windows 7 pre-installed. I have the Toshiba Recovery Discs as well, but I believe those will wipe the hard drive and I will lose all of my valuable data. Does that help at all?

If you can get to Safe Mode, and you got AVG (Free) installed, uninstall it, as well as any other malware and anti virus software.
Considering the issue at hand, you don't need to worry about viruses.

Go to Safe mode without Command prompts.

you may need to download this
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto.....-computer/
and burn to cd then boot your system copy or move your important files / data.
Then you can try the load drivers option.
Here is some info on the last driver to attempt to load and hung your system

this appears to be AVG (anti virus program) related... so do you have AVG on your computer?

How to disable AVG when the operating system cannot be started properly

If you suspect that an AVG component is preventing your computer from starting properly, follow the steps below to verify the situation.

1. Use AVG Rescue CD to boot your computer.

2. When the AVG Rescue CD is launched, select the Utilities -> File Manager menu item.

3. Navigate to the mounted system drive. This will be /mnt/sda1/ in most cases.

4. Within this drive, navigate to the /Windows/system32/drivers/ folder.
- Rename (using the F6 key) all files starting with avg (e.g. avgldx86.sys, avgtdix.sys, etc.) to back them up. You can change their extension from .sys to .bak, for example.

5. Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE and reboot the system (make sure to remove the AVG Rescue CD from your optical drive before doing so).
- Your system will boot without AVG being involved in the process.

Hey drwho1

I do have AVG installed, so I tried the solution you referred me to (changing the name of the AVG related files) Unfortunately that did not work :'(

Do you (or anyone else for that matter) recommend using an Ubuntu disc to move all files onto an external and then using the recovery discs I have to reinstall Windows, and then moving all files back once I have run a virus scan on them?

Thanks in advance!
