I hope you didn't pay more than $50 for it (assuming it works).
It's not just the BIOS that would need replacing, but any rational upgrade would be a total gut and replacement. New CPU = new motherboard = new RAM = new PSU.
You might be able to put in a slightly faster Sempron (3400 or 3800, depending on socket). But overall that would only be a slight performance increase.

Hate to say it, but you really should have researched this more. The processor is almost 10 years old making it almost comically obsolete. I think the biggest problem you'll run into trying to upgrade the processor here is not figuring out which processor, but actually finding the processor for sale. That said, it looks like the best cpu for socket 754 was the AMD Athlon 64 3700+. Here are the listings on Ebay: http://tinyurl.com/m9yd8kn I couldn't find them stocked or for sale anywhere else, but you're buying at your own risk if you choose to do so. I really wouldn't recommend it as you'd be better off saving your money for the time being.

One more thing, unless you're just sufing the Internet or doing email, I wouldn't never buy an Emachine. They use the cheapest parts.
