hey guys i am building my first gaming pc and i am getting a intel i5 3470 and was wondering down the road can i take it out and replace it or would i have to buy a new MOBO?

Solution

It's as simple as that! I'd go with an i7 because you can overclock it while a Xeon cannot be overclocked.
Also, I believe you would have to get an LGA 2011 socket motherboard for Xeon, so there goes your ability to upgrade on your current mobo.

You wont be able to replace it with a current cpu as the new generation are socket 1150 and will not work on a 1155 board. If you switch you build to a haswell based system and a socket 1150 board you will be probably be able to upgrade to the next gen after haswell, but after that maybe, maybe not.

Intel just released the 4th gen which is now LGA 1150. you have the 3rd gen. overall it all depends on how long you wanna keep your system. i feel you pain i am in the process of upgrading.

Yes you can. But depending on how far down the road we are talking it may be hard. The i5 3470 uses intel's socket 1155. This has been replaced with the 1150 socket for the 4th generation intel CPU's. So if you upgrade you cpu w/o upgrading your motherboard, you will likely have to buy used. Otherwise you will have to upgrade the motherboard to buy a newer intel chip.

so if i wanted to put Intel Core i7-2600S in it just open the latch carefully take out the i5 with out pushing down making sure not to damage the pins on the MOBO and then simply instal the new cpu? and is intel xeon better than intel i7s?
