Help... new build not working 3770k ASUS Z77

Hi,

Not sure where this belongs but my new computer build isn't working :??:

When it's plugged in and I hit the power switch is powers up and the fan spins for a few seconds and then it shuts down and repeats itself a couple seconds later. The monitor never recognizes that it's receiving a signal from the comptuer (i.e. it stays in power-saver mode).

There's a red light on the motherboard that comes on next to my CPU. I've double checked that the CPU is seated well and double checked the power to the motherboard.

What could be wrong?

The parts I've used are listed on PCPartPicker but basically consist of:

- Intel core i7 3770k
- ASUS P8Z77 Pro-V Thunderbolt
- Seasonic x-Series 650W Gold PSU
- Corsair 32GB Vengeance LP RAM
- Samsung 840 Pro series 256GB SSD

Any help is appreciated.

he didn't have his CPU power plugged in so his mobo's hitting a CPU error cuz it can't detect the CPU

first things first: see that 8pin plug on the upper left hand side of your picture next to the big blue ASUS heatsinks on the motherboard? that's your CPU 8-pin power socket. you want to use the CPU power cord from your PSU and connect to that firmly. it has no power, which is why your CPU light is turning on

Sorry... I meant, I'm not sure where to post this question... cpu, motherboard forum, somewhere else?
I just used the oem cooler that came with the CPU and I believe there was some paste already on it? When I took off the CPU cooler to double check that I seated the CPU properly there was grey goop on there.

this forum is fine. and you're right, the stock CPU cooler did come with it's own thermal paste. but if you've pulled it off once already (or more than once), you've introduced bubbles, and should wipe that paste off carefully using isopropanol and some lint free paper, and apply new paste such as ArcticSilver5

AND i'll repeat, you didn't plug in your CPU power cable

Guilty! Thank-you! Sorry I'm such a noob! This is the first computer I've built in over 10 years so I don't really remember a whole lot! That got me past that issue. Good thing I put that picture up!

Now on to the next two problems.

1) I'm getting a "CPU Fan Error!" message displaying on-screen on boot up but the CPU fan is spinning... what could be causing this?

2) The red light next to the CPU is out but now I have a red light on the "Boot Device LED" . This time I do have the Samsung SSD connected to both the PSU and the SATA 6 cable connected to the SATA 6 port on the motherboard. There's no OS on the SSD yet, is that why I'm getting a red light? I haven't changed anything in the BIOS yet and the CPU temperature is at 32C or 89.8F. The side panel to my case is off right now for troubleshooting purposes.

I did take it off once so I will follow your advice and get some new thermal paste on there tomorrow (all the stores are closed now). Thanks for that tip. I'll watch that tutorial, too. I actually did start watching that a short while ago but had to run off after only a couple minutes and then forgot about it.

REALLY lucky you put that picture up... would've taken us forever to figure it out otherwise. anyway

1). not sure about the CPU fan error. where did you plug in your CPU fan? there are many fan headers on any motherboard, maybe you plugged into a chassis fan header? please double check with your motherboard manual. the fan headers should also be labeled in really tiny text on the board

2). you're correct. you have an SSD plugged it, but it isn't a boot device, just an empty drive. as soon as you put that OS install disc in you'll be fine. 32C is nothing to worry about as far as CPU temps go. I've seen that vary from anywhere between 28-40C on idle depending on the conditions etc. That CPU should be safe up to 80C during normal operations

yeah, it can be a bit slow/boring. especially if you've build a PC before (even if it was a long time ago). I'll sometimes leave it on just as ambient sound when I build just to make sure I don't miss small things lol

Ugh. I'm 0 for 2 :pfff: and you're 2 for 2! :D I do believe it was plugged into a regular chassis fan header so it's moved now and the error is gone. Thanks!

Thanks for all your help. Tomorrow I'll watch that tutorial, get some paste, and start installing my OS, (oh, and go to work, sigh). I would have been up all night trying to figure this out (or else gone to bed baffled and confused) so thank-you very much!
