Hello. This is my first time posting on these forums but I am a slightly knowledgeable with this type of thing so i'm hoping with some good advice I can get this problem sorted out.

As the title says, I recently built a pc to replace an old hunk of junk so that I can do some gaming. After some research and a sale at microcenter, I picked up these components

CPU- AMD FX 6300 unlocked Black Edition
MoBo- Asrock 970 Extreme 4
PSU- Diablotek 750w Atx Modular Power Supply
RAM- 1 stick of Crucial Ballistix 4GB DDR3L-1600
GPU- EVGA Geforce 650 ti boost 2gb SC
OS-Windows Xp 32 bit (SP3)
Hard Drive-WD Caviar WD400BD 40GB
My case is a run of the mill Diablotek ATX Mid Tower and I also have a 500 GB External USB drive.

A few disclaimers- My budget for building this pc was very limited, which is why I am temporarily forced to keep using my old hard drive, OS, and a less than stellar PSU. I would also buy at least another 4GB stick of RAM to dual channel, but since I am limited to 4GB physical memory by my 32 bit OS there isn't a huge rush.

The Diablotek PSU is at least 80 plus bronze certified, although I would have certainly purchased a Corsair or another comparable brand if I had enough funds. I plan on replacing this PSU in the next 3 months either way to be on the safe side, and I will be buying a new HDD and upgrading to Win7 in the next few weeks.

One more piece of important information- My old pc also used IDE DVD drives, so I am currently without a working disc drive because the Extreme 4 only supports SATA (unless I get a converter but why bother). I know they are only like 25 bucks now and I will be getting one in the next few days but like i said, my budget is a serious limiting factor right now.

OK So my problem. I was able to use a friends laptop in order to run win2flash on my xp disk and put it on a flash drive. AFter installing windows on the old hard drive, I used another flash drive to install my mobo drivers so that I could access Windows Update and get the latest service pack and updates. I had some difficulties here, but I was able to sort them out. My problem occurs after I install the latest Nvidia drivers for my 650 ti boost. Everything is going along fine until I restart the pc when the installer prompts me to do so in order to finish installing updates. After going through the initial boot screens, the monitor loses signal and the GPU fan shoots to full power. I do not know if the motherboard is still operating, but the lights on the back of the panel are still on, and any USB sticks that are in the mobo will still be lit up.

After installing the drivers, I am only able to boot into safe mode. If I then remove the nvidia driver I can boot normally again. I am currently running through the HDMI on the back of the video card. I have used windows update to get all the updates I can, and I have also used the combination of driver fusion+control panel to completely remove the driver and re-install it several times. I tried the previous driver as well but no difference. The only thing I can do with the nvidia installed is use safe mode.

The only things I can think of are faulty hardware or compatibility issues. I looked on some online forums and saw that these components were compatible and I also asked someone at MicroCenter, but maybe somewhere along the line I goofed. Since I dont have a DVD drive yet, I havent been able to download the drivers for my Mobo or GPU straight off the CD so i have been installing them on a flash and transferring them over. Could that be an issue? I have also updated my BIOS.

Sorry if this is way too long winded, I only want to give the most useful information in order to get this fixed. After waiting so long to finally get what for me is a great GPU, it sucks to not be able to use it. Id really appreciate any help in trouble shooting this problem. I am not sure if there are any error logs that I should be posting with this, but I am willing to give whatever info as needed.

So are you saying that the PSU is the cause of the problem that im having right now? Or that it wont be reliable going forward? The bronze certification only refers to power efficiency if i'm not mistaken, that has nothing to do with the other performance of the machine huh? Thanks for your answer!

Thanks for your quick responses. I was actually trying to get that one when I went last time, but they didn't have any more. So my psu could be failing when it tries to kick in after the drivers are installed possibly? I'll try and swap those out a little later this week and i'll be sure to post back. Hopefully this does the trick, I really dont want to have to send my gpu back to amazon and wait forever to get it back :(

So I ended up getting a corsair cx 750
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139040

Unfortunately, now my pc fails to even boot up with the new psu installed. I noticed that my hard drive makes a little clicking noise when I start the pc now as well. The lights flicker, fans run, but no boot. I also got a plain SATA DVD drive and threw that in, although I don't think that would be the cause. Can anyone help me with what I should do now?

I read through the suggestions on the"before posting with no boot" thread and still no luck. The dr debug on my board says 00, and everything comes on when I hit the power button. At one point I held down the reset CMOS button as per a suggestion on a forum I read and now I'm worried that by resetting my bios my fx 6300 CPU is no longer supported by my bios. Could this be causing my problem?

I'd really appreciate some help, it has been over a week of me to messing
with this damn build for hours a day without success. I'm getting ready to toss this thing right out the window.

I went and returned my mobo and cpu. got the same fx6300 but i got a gigabyte 990fxA-UD3. Installed all the windows updates and then installed driver. I booted up a game, and before I could make it through the opening cutscene the same thing happened. Screen goes black and my gpu fan shoots to full. I can run in safe mode, and when I uninstall the nvidia drivers I can run in regular windows. Can someone please shed some light on this situation? This is really driving me crazy I could use a hand. Thanks

I have an old geforce 6200A, but the last time I tried it (before I replaced my motherboard) all it would say was the frequency was out of range when I installed it. I also dont have on board graphics.

I have been scouring the net, people are going on and on about nvidias latest round of drivers not being the best. I got these straight from their website. Could that be the problem?

I just started the RMA process from EVGA. This really blows, I bought this card because I wanted to get my rig off the ground right away. Now 2 weeks later, and another few weeks for the RMA I should have just went to the store and paid a few bucks more for a quality card that I could return in person instead of waiting for snail mail. My frustration is boiling over at this point, but thanks for your help SR-71. You are the only one giving me a hand and I really appreciate it.
