3/4 Way SLI. x79 vs z87

I am getting 3 Titans and I've done a lot of homework on this question, but the more I read on forum threads etc the more confusing it can get. Not everyone seems to completely agree.

Anyhow my question is, with a tri sli setup, is it better to go with an x79 setup or go with a z87 board with a plx chip. If I go with x79 I will be getting a 3930k and if it is a z87 I will be going with a 4770k.

I game on 1440p with the possibilty of adding 2 more 1440p screens soon.

A 3930k is definitely better than the 4770k, overclock it and you'll have a blast. However, the price is significantly higher. If you have all the money in the world I would get x79, that can run your titans at maximum performance. x79 also has 40 PCI lanes than z87 meaning more GPU bandwidth (@16x, @16x, @8x, @8x etc...) and don't forget the 3930k will last you a lot longer.

On further research, it seems that nvidia cards have issues running at pci-e 3.0 on 3930k and instead run at pci-e 2.0. This could prove to be a major bottleneck for multi gpu setup like mine. May have to rethink the x79 setup.

You can force them to run at pci-e 3.0 but many people have reported issues with this, while some say it was successful. A lot depends on which revision 3930k you get.

Maybe get 2 7990's or 2 690's to reduce the bandwidth bottleneck, but that wouldn't be ideal.

Im def getting Titans, thats for sure. As for the motherboard and cpu, I am not decided yet after seeing the issues with 3930k and pci-e 3.0. My options atm seem to be, either go with haswell and a motherboard with a plx chip, or wait till sept and get the Ivybridge - E which have pci-e 3.0 support on an x79 board.

Will Ivy-E have the same heatspreader issues as haswell and ivy?

I don't really know, but it's highly likely they won't. Anyway, yeah getting z87 with an PLX seems the best way to go. This one offers tons of PCIe connectivity via PLX chip, but in my opinion, it's a little overpriced. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131974
