Can't change FSB frequency?

So I understood that if you want to overclock the C2D E6600 you need to change the FSB frequency, and not the CPU frequency. (Like I did on my P4).
I however can not see any option even similiar to "Fsb frequency".
Only FSB Voltage or something if I saw it correctly.
Mobo is P5L-MX by asus.

What's the deal with this?

no heatsink on the mosfets... probably not gonna make much of an overclocker even if you manage to find the settings. just looked at your MB's manual here is how to overclock... go to

1) advanced
2) jumper free configuration
3) change AI overclocking from auto to manual
4) adjust your FSB/CPU frequency

if those options aren't there, you'll need to update your bios first as you might be using an OEM special bios

No heatsink on the mosfets? What do you mean with this exactly?
And about changing the CPU frequency - I changed it from 200 to 210 to test it out, but Computer -> Properties still showed 2.4ghz.

Alright so I switched from Manual to Auto and back to manual, it automatically changed to 266.
Stupid me. The 200 was from my old CPU.
So I added 10 on the 266, so now it's 276.
It still shows 2,4ghz in Computer properties and CPU-Z though. What is going wrong?

Well, looks like CPU Speed pro shows my correct speed, which is now 2,52ghz.
Windows and CPU-Z seem to give false indications, or CPU-Z just doesn't show the endresult (9x280).
Anyone familiar with this?

cpu may have clocked itself down a bit if you werent doing anything demanding at the time, resulting in it appearing to be running slower than its potential.

Alright so I noticed something that I hope someone can explain for me.
I overclocked the CPU frequency to 333mhz which equals a CPU speed of 3.0ghz.
I ran Prime95 to test the stability for 1 hour, no errors no warning.
My temperature didn't get higher than 50 degrees celcius.
However, in every game I tried, I had around 10 FPS less and in 1 game even frequent lagspikes.
I underclocked back to 2.7Ghz and my FPS are higher again, and I have no lagspikes.

What is causing this? Because I've read alot about the E6600 functioning very well on 3ghz.

you're probably undervolting something a bit... remember, when you overclock with the FSB you're also overclocking the Northbridge and Ram... look into playing with the ram and northbridge settings a bit... at the least bump the voltages. I find with most cpus, when one part of the ram/nb/cpu are clocked wrong or undervolted, you will run into a slowdown in your system performance. Thats usually the warning sign something is out of balance a bit.

Likely your ram is clocked too fast right now... and something is bottlenecking badly.

also remember... your mb might be temp throttling. Your mb has no heatsinks of note... so parts will overheat easily without robust case airflow.

i would downclock your ram a bit... see what happens.

My motherboard temperature never goes above 55 celcius.

The RAM modules that I use are both 667mhz.
CPU-Z however tells me that it's 266mhz per stick, not sure why.

This is what I see at Dram frequency:
http://tinypic.com/r/2j2u82b/5

What do you suggest me to change it to?

EDIT: Forget what I wrote above, I figured out why it says 266mhz.
266x2 = 533, meaning both modules are 533mhz. Sorry for the inconvenience!

So what should I change the ram frequency to?

If i had a dime for every person with an overheating part who said "but the temps read fine, it can't be overheating" i'd be a rich man by now. Temp monitors on both the MB and CPU are notoriously inaccurate. That doesn't mean your temps are wrong... just that they might not be accurate. Furthermore, there are lots of parts that can overheat, and i guarantee those temp probes don't cover them all.

As for your ram... you'll have to experiment. Overclocking is about trial and error. You'll need to play with it yourself to find settings that work the best; as every CPU/MB/RAM/CPU cooler or PSU is different, and what works for one might not work for another. I suspect you'll have to play with case airflow, ram and nb settings to smooth out your experience... i can give you pointers on a case by case basis... but no one "really" knows what needs to be done to make YOUR system work right.

Alright, correct me if I am wrong.
I have to lower the ram frequency, it is now 533mhz and the only option lower than that is 450mhz. So that is essentially my only option isn't it?
If it doesn't run smooth at 3.0ghz after that I basically have no more fixes?
Thanks in advance.

I didn't say you HAVE to lower the ram frequency, only that you should try it.

as to other fixes, voltages are fixes too... and from what i remember when i glanced at that bios info in the motherboard manual there are plenty of voltage settings to play with as well. Something might be over/undevolted... also, if you have to back the overclock off 1 step just to make the machine faster do it. I found a pretty nice sweet spot on my overclocked phii x4 965be... though i can drag this cpu up to 4.2ghz, i found it was only stable enough for day to day at 4.0... and frankly, the fans were too loud, and temps a bit too high at that point... so i dropped it down to what seems to be the sweet spot in this setup... 3.7... at 3.7 i don't need any voltage increases anywhere, and i can overclock my ram a bit, overclock the HT/CPU-NB a bit... and generally produce some of my best benching results.

Sure, i could use this CPU at 4.0... but there are a number of factors which mitigate against me doing that. As a result, i have a nice moderate overclock... perhaps some day i'll get my hands on a better cpu cooler and push this overclock higher, but right now this seems to be good enough.

Alright I overclocked from 2.7ghz to 3ghz and lowered the dram frequency.
I see some improvement, but it's very small.
Arma 2 gained around 2-3 fps and Fallout new Vegas gained around 5-8fps.
I'm assuming that such a big overclock is supposed to give a better improvement?
You told me that I'm supposed to experiment with the settings, but I quite frankly don't understand what most of them do. So if you / somebody can tell me what I should over/under volt and over/underclock to actually get a good amount of more fps from this overclock, please do.
I don't need exact amounts, just a steering in the right direction.
