I want to build a desktop to use at college, and my choice is to either get a crap laptop, or build a decent desktop that I can later, when paychecks start rolling in, upgrade into badassery. So, here is what I'm thinking. Right now, I am using Linux, so no need for operating system.
Will use intergrated graphics right now, later getting dedicated graphics card. HDD should be easy to come by cheaply, and ram as well, but I would still like a good idea of prices if I have to buy new.

I would like a good upgrade path, so I want to get AMD. Its cheaper, and I will never max it out.

I would like a decent case to house all of it in.

The price has been updated, so hopefully this will help out a bit.

Anybody up to helping? Or give me a starting place?

Thanks!

Just saw this graphics card on newegg. Is it worth it/in my budget?

I think you've spending too much of you budget on just the case. Good quality cases are always going on sale at Newegg for $30 or so. Today they selling the NZXT Source 210 for $25 after 10 mir,and add a Corsair CX430 for $25 after 20 mir both have free shipping. That takes care of case and psu for $50 and both are decent quality. A 1TB hhd is going to run $60 to 70. A optical drive can be had for $15 to 20 and 4GB of ram for $30 to 40. That leaves about $180 for cpu and mobo. This is a bad time to go Intel. If you go with a Pentium cpu yor' stuck with ivy since Intel has not release Haswell Pentium yet. You'll also want a z mobo so when you upgrade cpu you can OC and not have to buy a new mobo.
Where do you live? If there's a Microcenter or Frys store you may save soom money on bundles. If you do and don't miond going AMD you can get a FX630 and an Asus M5A97 R2 mobo for $175.

If you still want to go Intel also at microcenter you can get the i3 3244 and a MSI Z77A-G41 for $175 also. If you can find another $60 you can get a i5 3570k with the MSI mobo for $235. Then all you need latter is a gpu and not waste any money.

There are some interesting FX-6300 Combo Deals at the Egg from $300 to $400, but I think you should start with a decent motherboard like the Asus M5A97 R2.0 AM3+ at $105. At least you have a fighting chance for a Steamroller upgrade down the road.

Otherwise, if you realllllly want to stick with Intel, you simply have to snag a s1150 motherboard. Intel does not drop prices on CPUs as they 'age' like AMD does, so a year or so from now you'll still be paying $200 for a 3570K as a 2nd gen Haswell is hitting the market at the same price.

The amd builds will not work right now, since they wouldn't have a gpu in them. I need something with integrated graphics, because I need something that I can use now, but be able to upgrade later. That's why I chose the intel route, because the only thing on the AMD side is the APU, and the new ones coming out will be using a different socket, correct?

The FX-6300 Combo Deals noted above come with the Radeon 4250 IGP on AM3+ 'black socket' motherboards on 'older' 7xx-series chipsets (no USB3 or SATA 6Gb/s)

Those motherboards would be unlikely to receive BIOS updates for Steamroller as they are typically at the lower end of the price spectrum (but, stranger things have happened)
