Hi All..

My PC motherboard Mercury PI945GCM

I have a Segate Internal harddisk which was recently failed. I removed it from computer. So i bought the Sony 1 tb extrenal hardidsk (Model number: HDE1/B)
, so that it can be used as both internal and external harddsik. Connected it to computer through USB and I tried Windows XP Service pack 3 for installation which have also SATA drivers included.

I came to the screen where i created 5 partitions and when i chosed the first drive for installing XP, it asked to press enter to install. I pressed enter and it was showing that to contact the support for further installation with some message saying 'its not an error'. I forgot to take a pic through my mobile. Will do it tomorrow.

Any idea about this problem guys..???

Will an external harddisk be used as a Internal Harddisk by installing a Windows OS. Guys please help.

Thanks,
Srinivas

Apparently it can be done, but it is a pain.
Specifically for XP - http://www.techspot.com/community/topics/how-to-install-and-boot-windows-on-an-external-usb-hard-drive.116114/
No idea if this works or doesn't. I've never tried it, nor had a need to.

However...why? Trying to run the Windows boot through the USB will be painfully slow. Just get a regular internal disk.

You can easily (well at least usually) crack open the case and remove the drive to use as a regular internal drive. Installing Windows on an external drive is not supported, is tough to get done, and will be a LOT slower as it's running off your USB ports.

Getting an external drive and then taking it out of the case to use as an internal is actually often a much better way to go, I just bought a 2TB new external drive on clearance for half of what an internal drive of that same model would cost. The case opened easily and now I not only have a much cheaper 2TB drive, but also a "free" external SATA to USB case.

I have found the error dispalyed on my computer while searching internet:

The following statement appears:

Your computer start-up program cannot gain access to the disk containing the partition, or free space you chose. Set-up cannot install Windows XP on this disk. The lack of access does not necessarily indicate an error condition. For example, the disk may be attached to a SCSI adapter that wasn’t installed by the computer manufacturer, or a second hard disk controller, are typically not visible to start-up unless special software is used. The SATA drive is the original from the factory so it's not something to do with a controller for it.

I asked the dealer can it be used as internal hard disk and he said it can be used, so i bought it. :(

I regret my decision now. ;(

Now i am confused. The process in the link you have given is quiet big and is there any thing easier. how it will be with windows 7..???

Hi Hang the 9,

It will be difficult to me to break the beautiful New Sony Hardisk of mine. Its looking really gorgeous. And also its sealed all the way.

Are there any alternatives like connectors or so..??

Thanks for the reply. :)

It can be used as an internal disk if you take it out of the case and plug it inside the computer. Not sure what you had in mind when you aked that question, but that is what it means. Windows is not meant to be installed on an external drive.

You can copy files to the drive just like you can with an internal drive, you just can't use it as a boot drive.
