Balanced PC build?

I built my PC couple of months ago and I feel like it is not as effective as I expected it to be. I still have issues with lag and it is not as fast.

I think it is my cpu that is bottle necking the whole system, but I can't be sure. If someone could suggest what would be a better cpu for this AMD build, that would sure help me a lot. Or maybe it is something else?
I do hope I posted this in the right section

CPU: AMD A10-5800K
RAM: G.SKILL Sniper 8GB 2X4GB DDR3-1866
MBOARD: ASRock FM2A75M-DGS
GFXCARD: MSI R7870 Twin Frozr 2GB
HARDRIVE: Western Digital SATA
PSU: XFX 550W

You're fine with the CPU for photoshop and illustrator. There won't be a substantial dramatic increase in performance for photoshop and illustrator. I use photoshop...

ur hitting the bare minimum requirements on PSU.
The CPU may be the slowest part, but it's prly not bottlenecking it that much. Ur GPU is good, but it won't max out all games. And with all data coming from just 1 HDD, you may want to think about getting a SSD for the system partition. I had a 64GB SSD fill up real quick, so i only recommend 120GB SSD's as system drives or bigger. Also, like i said before, you kinda skimped on the PSU...

What about the CPU? Couldn't I be using a much faster one? Which one?

oh hmm... what would you recommend me getting on the psu? How many watts? and I will look into SSDs after i'm done with the cpu

Your CPU is not the bottleneck. What I'd recommend is upgrading is your mechanical hard drive. Get an SSD and you will see a huge performance boost.

The CPU is mainly responsible for physics in games and loading speeds for programs and games are always bottlenecked by mechanical hard drives. Get an SSD and you'll see a huge change.

Update: Get an SSD before you decide to upgrade your CPU. Otherwise, you'll be wasting your money. Also, your PSU is fine, you don't need to upgrade... An AMD 7950 requires at least a 550W and the 7870 doesn't draw as much power let alone the FM2 systems... your system won't even be close to the 550W so you're good.

Wow theres something I learned today. Never thought Hard drives would make any difference. I'll look more into this, and I am a graphic designer and play games often(not a hardcore gamer though) I tend to often use programs like photoshop, illustrator, after effects etc..So I guess I do need processing power. I've heard intel's are better for those, but not in my budget right now. I will upgrade in near future. As for now I guess I need a suggestion on ssd. And you are right I specifically picked components that draw less power so I didn't spend to much on a psu.

You're fine with the CPU for photoshop and illustrator. There won't be a substantial dramatic increase in performance for photoshop and illustrator. I use photoshop, illustrator and after effects on my FX-8350 and it works great... no matter what CPU you get you'll still be waiting to transcode, encode, etc..anyway.. just a matter of how long you wait.

Get an SSD and you won't go back to faulty failing mechanical hard drives.. remember, bottlenecks operate at the slowest component of your computer. More cases than none, your hard drive is the slowest part. If there is any power surge or force shutdown, the platters are struck by the pin thus wearing it down tremendously faster.

If you get an SSD you won't need to upgrade your CPU any time soon. Trust me, you're fine with the A10-5800k, you can have photoshop and illustrator use all the cores.

Lastly, Adobe is now working with AMD to optimize their programs to work more efficiently with AMD products.

Makes sense, thanks a lot. Adobe working with AMD... SWEET!
So now which SSD brand/model would you recommend? I'm sure there is a competitive field out there, some effective than the other. I don't want to make another mistake and buy a failing one.
