Looking at a memory upgrade and i'm not sure what works best. Some posts suggest 4x4 and others 2x8. I'm running the asus crosshair v with an amd vishera 8350.I also can't see myself really expanding past 16gb either. With the models im looking at the timings are the same and the price close enough that i'm only caring about what will run the best.
Thanks

Always better with 2x8GB if mobo will run it, unless your system can utilize quad channel (which is ONLY Intel socket 2011/X79 chipset) and contrary to above comments NO, AMD doesn't run quad channel (except in server CPUs and the 8450 is NOT a server CPU). 2 sticks is less stress on the MC (Memory Controller) than 4 and that's a good thing for AMD CPUs, as their MCs are as strong (comparatively speaking) as Intels

First thing people are going to ask in order to answer this question is, "What do you use your PC for?"

If it's for gaming, you'll never use more than 8GB (in the foreseeable future), so if you're already set on going w/ 16GB then you definitely won't need to add memory before it's time to switch out your mobo for a new architecture anyway, so the 4x4GB would be the better option as it will get you better performance due to the quad-channel benefits.

However, if you use your PC for things such as video/photo editing, more memory is always better. In that case, I'd go with the 2x8GB to leave those extra slots open for a future upgrade.

In short, if you're definitely good with 16GB and don't think you'll ever need more until it's time for a whole new build, the 4x4GB is the way to go.

In short you don't get quad channel on anything but the most expensive mobos, using all 4 slots places greater strain on the memory controller. using two larger chips is the better way to go.

Its primary uses are for gaming and sound/music editing. I was told I would never need more than my current 8Gb but I've been maxing that and been looking to try 16. I can't see myself needing more than that, atleast not before new architecture comes out.

My current mobo isn't X79 chipset, so it wouldn't support quad channel anyway. With only dual channel, i'm guessing the two larger sticks would be better?
