which tempature is right?

I have a 8350 on top of an asus M5A99X evo motherboard and i use core temp to monitor my cpu tempatures. My bios is reading around 30- 37c but im unsure if that is the actual chip or just the socket on the motherboard, core temp is reading 15-20c on core 0-8 all across the board. 30-40c under load. Im unsure of which tempature is correct and knowing which one i should keep track of and whether my cpu is running really cool or a little hotter than i'd like it too. These tempature are while it's stock because i was unsure which was correct so i adjusted it back to stock speed.

Are you running your PC inside of a walk-in freezer? If not, Core Temp is definitely obtaining an inaccurate measurement. Unless you're using exotic cooling (phase change, TEC, N2), your socket and core temperatures will never be below that of the ambient environment. For your cores to be at 15-20 degrees centigrade while idle, the ambient environment would have to be between 5 and 10 degrees centigrade.

I find it likely that your system firmware is reading 30-37 on the socket. Asus uses a third party system management chip (nuvoton NCT6776F on my board) to read voltage levels from the PSU, monitor temperature sensors including the one on the socket, and perform fan control. These are the temperatures that show up in the system firmware.

There are also temperature sensors built into the CPU itself which can be polled by most system management software.

The most comprehensive tool to manage all of this is in my opinion HWInfo32/HWInfo64. It is regularly updated and properly handles all major firmware layouts and onboard sensors for Intel and AMD CPUs/GPUs.

well i have downloaded your HWinfo64 and it now is saying my cpu is running at 15c-20c or 60 f. everything else looks right, gpu is at 36c, HDD's at 34-36c. that just seems to low for an fx 8350 even at idle. i know for a fact these things run a little hotter than my old phenom ii x4 840t and all these HW monitor's are saying its running alot cooler.

That's still not right. It should be no less than 10 degrees higher than the temperature of your room.

I suspect that the firmware on your motherboard is out of date. If you previously had an 840T in there and recently upgraded to an 8350 then I suspect that the motherboard is running firmware that does not fully support the 8350 as this was added after the board's release. The latest firmware revision is 1708 available from the link below

i upgraded the motherboard when i bought the 8350. i went from an asrock icafe 770 to the m5a99x evo. got the motherboard and chip together, upgraded the bios for the 8350 when i got it.

i'm just going to buy a LCD fan controller with its own tempature sensors and go by that i guess. hope that works. Want an acurate temp reading for when i need to oc the thing.

FX- processors have wrong idle core readings.

for example hwmonitor tells that my cores are 13c at idle fx-6100 @ 4.4, load up prime95, core temp jumps straight to 35 and starts rising to about 50 from there.

Just start overclocking ( if you know how to ), and try to keep the cores <55c

edit : socket temp 30-35c depending on the ambient.

Fan controllers don't typically have a great temperature sensors, but it will work partially.

With your GPU being at 34ish, I would imagine your cpu to be within a few degrees of it.

After a little adjustment i believe i am within a few C of what my cpu is actually idling at. i have reading for past 12hrs of it idling at around 30-32c. Gpu is right at 32c also so i think i'm within a few C of the right read out finally.

This sounds much more accurate. GPU and CPU typically idle within a few degrees of each other. Glad you got it figured out!
