Hello all,

I have a question regarding fans and the such for a cpu cooler.

I have purchased and installed the hyper 212 evo, http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E1683...
and am quite happy with it. However itinially I had also purchased what appeared to be a very good fan, the Cougar Vortex http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E1683...

Now, I had planned on using this cougar fan to push air into the EVO and use the stock EVO fan to pull it out, so push pull obviously. Thing is, the cougar is a 3 pin and the stock fan is a 4 pin. Now I am far from an expert on motherboard fan heads, actually that is why I am here, asking my question... Is it a good idea to use the 4 pin to push or is that sort of thing actually irrelevant?

It appeared to me that the cougar was the superior fan and therefore should have been pushing but my inexperience here with the 3 pin vs 4 pin left me confused and I elected to use the stock cooler to push. If anyone with the experience and time to help me on this could let me know if this is right could do so, I would greatly appreciate it.

Should I be using the stock for push, or the cougar for push? And should I even be doing push/pull at all? I read it is actually irrelevant on the EVO and at best just reduces the RPMs needed to cool, but doesn't help the actual cooling process. Would I be better off with just push and one more case fan above the heatsink?

Thank you for your expertese should you decide to respond!

Do you have a rear exhaust fan? If so, then that will serve as a pull. It is not as effective, but it will be fine. There is little to no advantage setting up a push/pull configuration on the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO.

I did have a rear exhaust fan but it was 80 mm. I actually went over the specs again and it looks like the newegg page for the cougar had a typo claiming the fan moved more air than it actually does. But it looks like a 3 pin fan is not a variable speed fan so I believe I will leave the evo stock fan and put in another exhaust fan like you suggested, might help more for case circulation than it does for push/pull.
