Hi all,

I'm about to build my first system. These are the parts I settled on. Can I get a thumbs up (or down) on the compatibility of these components?

Use of the computer: Gaming only.

I have a Dell U2711 (1440p), and two GTX 680s. I also have a Samsung SSD (256 gigs), and a Western Digital HDD.

Reason for building: My old core i7 920 packed it in. This was in a 2009 Alienware Predator 2 desktop, which I loved more than I can say.

Parts List:

1) 4770k

2) ASUS Z87-A LGA 1150 Intel Z87 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX

3) CORSAIR Dominator Platinum 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 Desktop Memory Model CMD8GX3M2A1866C9 (I want to buy the $20 light kit as well, which should tell you a little about me.)

4) CORSAIR Professional Series Gold AX850 (CMPSU-850AX) 850W ATX12V v2.31 / EPS12V v2.92 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply

5) CORSAIR Hydro Series H100i Water Cooler

6) Case: Corsair 540 Air

Notes:

I chose the 4770 because I'm looking for a little longevity out of this build. I don't want to tinker with this system for years to come. The money I'd save by buying an i5 isn't a huge, huge deal.

I see that there's an AX 860 PSU as well. What's the difference? I was hoping to buy the $80 custom cables from Corsair (the multi coloured ones). At their website they indicate you need an 850. I assume you can use these cables with the 860 too?

I'm also going to try my hand at over-clocking the CPU, though I've never done it before.

An i7 will offer NOTHING over an i5 in terms of gaming ever. There is no reason to get an i7 at all. Also, you need the K series CPU to overclock. the non K series one has a locked multiplier.

I prefer air coolers to closed loop water coolers because they cool the same and are much quieter.

That RAM is a waste of money, but you seem cool with it so whatever. An 8gb RAM kit can cost as little as $50 as and just as good performance wise.

Get an i5-4670K. With a cooler like that, you want to be OC'ing, trust me. You don't need an i7, as the only difference will be hyperthreading, which would only benefit you in heavy video rendering, and things of that matter. Buying an i7 over an i5 probably won't help future proof your PC anyway, as most games have yet to even utilize 4 cores, let alone 8. You cannot overclock with an intel processor without a K on the end.

Guys, thanks for the advice. Honestly, I agree about getting the i5.

But just for the hell of it, could somebody confirm the compatibility of the parts for me?

Again, thanks for the help. It's super appreciated.

It all looks good to me. Sick case though! Idk why, but I love the funky design.
