FX-8320 Overlock on Asrock 970 Extreme4?

I'm planning to overclock the 8320 to 4.0ghz (same as 8350) on the Asrock 970 extreme4 with a H60 cooling. Will this be a problem?

I know what you guys going to say, "that board only has 4+1 VRM phase, it's terrible!)

The reason I didn't get a 990FX is because I bought the 970 extreme4 for only $50 :) while the 990FX extreme4 will be around $140. The $50 deal for the 970 Extreme4 (half off) seemed like a really good deal so I went for it

plus I'm not planning crossfire my 7870 so a 990FX seems a little overkill for me

Note: I went with the extreme4 instead of the 3 is because of the USB 3 header :)

CPU: FX-8320
Mobo: Asrock 970 Extreme4
Cooler: H60
Ram: 8gb (2gb x 4)
Case: Antec 300
PSU: 730w
GPU: Sapphire 7870

  1. H60 isn't a great cooler...you'd honestly be just as well off with a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO. If you wanted to go more than that...look at something like the Noctua NH-D14...which would cool equivalent to something like the H100i. Honestly though, the CM 212 EVO is plenty for an OC over 4.0 GHz...
  2. I haven't order the H60 yet, but was actually planning to. I already have a Cooler Master TX3 from a previous comp, will that suffice?

What do you think about the 970 Extreme4 4+1 phase overclocking the 8320 to 4.0 though? I'm scared I'm gonna blow up something :(

That board is good for overclocking...just don't get too crazy. Asrock has beefier VRMs than some of the other companies.
  4. I'm only wanting to get the FX-8320 to 4.0ghz (same lvl as the 8350). That isn't asking for too much is it?
  5. Nah, you're fine there...you could probably get over 4.0 if you wanted.
  6. The Noctua NH-D14 is around $80 while the H80i is around the same price

Still stay with the Noctua instead of the H80?
  7. Yes! Noctua is equivalent to H100.

    Don't forget to pick a solution :)
  8. gotcha, thanks :)

did u saw that FX 8320 doesn't come under the supported cpu list for Asrock 970 extreme 4? i have this two things and my temperature is horribly high.. whats ur temperature at load while playing high end games?
  10. Im running the fx8320 @ 4.2ghz
I do have a waterblock keeping temps 35-40c on high end games
Asrock extreme4 970 does not have this cpu under supported list, but its been running fine for almost a year now, and still going.
Also have a gtx 660 Superclocked FTW/acx cooler, overclocked and using bios mode to overvolt the card. All running extremely well, with temps never going above 75c on max load.

Personally i think this is a pretty good combo for the price.
