I have currently installed everything for my very first gaming build, but I am at the point where I need to start plugging stuff in. I am not confident where each wire goes and I am terrified of short circuiting something because the wire is in the wrong place. Can someone point me to a guide or some tips on plugging everything in to the mother board. If you need any other information feel free to ask. Thanks ahead of time!

Generally all computer wire connectors can only fit one way... motherboard wire connectors have one way only so they can't be plugged the wrong way... besides both motherboard and graphic cards have their instructions sheet or manual... the CPU cooler connector can only be fitted on the right connector which besides is named in small print... it could be connected to the case fan connector but the wires will probably not reach that far and if they do, no damage can be done as both fans run on the same voltage... hard disc and optical drive connections both digital and power can also fit one way only. The back panel connectors are generally shaped and colored the same as the device cable connector. The front panel (switch and LEDs)...

So, unless you force the connections, you can't go wrong.

Solution

I forgot to mention that it's more likely to cause damage to a computer from Electro Static Discharge than from incorrectly wiring it. So make sure to discharge yourself from ESD* by touching the computer case or any metal surface/object/pipe before and while assembling it or connecting the wires. Better if the metal object is grounded and even better to use an anti-static wrist wtrap. This is very important but particularly if there is a carpet where you assemble the computer.

Also make sure to add a Nobreaks or a UPS to the power line, to protect it from electrical spikes and damage related to power outages.
