I'm a college student looking for a new laptop. My previous laptop was a Toshiba brand laptop that was also refurbished which lasted 3 and a half years until I spilled water on it by accident. I'm looking for a laptop mainly for university work, movies, and gaming.

The first laptop is the (New) HP ENVY 15z-j000 Notebook PC with an AMD Quad A8 5550M processor, 6GB DDR3 RAM / 750GB HHD AMD Radeon HD 8000, 15.6" with 1920x1080 Display for $600 w/ tax

The second laptop is the (Refurbished) Toshiba Satellite P875-S7102B with Intel Core i7-3630QM, 8GB DDR3 RAM / 750GB HHD, Mobile Intel HD Graphics, 17.3" with 1920x1080 for $570 w/ tax

Which laptop is more cost effective?

Solution

I think they would both do just fine, and perhaps the Hp would perform better overall. 6gb of ram is a pretty decent amount, however 8gb is better. The i7 is a better all around processor, but the a8 will out perform it in any game.

Not in gaming at all. The A8 with its 8000 series APU GPU chipset will blow away the i7's integrated GPU.

If it is all around multitasking and no gaming you want, then the i7 will be much better. But if you want a hope of even running games at all, you have to get the HP.

Yes, very true. But in this case, I think the i7 build will be better, as unfortunately school is more important than games XD

I'm not looking to play hardcore games, only MOBAs such as League of Legends. I also do a lot of research via internet and I tend to open a lot of tabs. Which computer would be the best to do both?

The i7 system will not play games at anything but low settings really.

Both will be fine for having alot of tabs open. the only time the i7 would shine was if you did any video editing or encoding.

I would get the APU system just in case you ever want to play a more demanding game.
