Two routers to extend network/wifi range?

My main router is Belkin AC1200 and want to know if it’s possible to connect my old D-Link DIR 651 (not ddwrt compatible) as a media bridge/wifi range extender on the other side of my house connected with Ethernet?
When I connect the two without changing any settings it seems like I can either access the network OR internet but not both.
I know a little about computes and I’ve tried a few things that I found online but nothing seems to work and seems pretty complicated. Any simple solutions?

For the second router you must turn off DHCP. Give it an SSID different than your original. You can also give it a static IP. If your Belkin is 192.168.1.1 then give it "Belkin extender" and 192.168.1.10 or something like that.
Do this connected directly to the extender not wirelessly.

Thanks, followed your steps but after changing static IP I can't connect back with the wired router. Also not sure what I should set netmasks to.
