I have a sony Viao VFN-FS660/w. it has two slots for RAM. A 512 in each slot. Sony says max RAM allowed is a Gig but I need more RAM. Is there a way around this? I'd like at least another GIG. Thanks
If the manufacturer says so, you are likely out of luck since their BIOS is probably not programmed to recognize any more than that.
If your laptop uses DDR1 or DDR2, you will likely have to pay a huge markup on RAM and might want to consider upgrading instead to benefit from much cheaper DDR3 unless your old laptop has a few specific features you are particularly attached to that prevent you from ditching it.

As said...if Sony says 1GB is it, then 1GB is almost certainly it. Doubtful the machine would recognize any more. Even if you can find some DDR at a reasonable price.
And adding another 1GB, in that system, won't really do a lot. Everything else in it is old and slow.
Thanks all! was just trying to eek a bit more out of it. Can't spring for a lap top at the moment.
