Hello I had an old 2500k (at stock clock speeds) and I decided to build A computer for the family but when I'm browsing youtube videos the temps are hitting 54 Celsius, I have a zalman 9900 max heatsink on it I expected the temps to be better than that. Are they alright for everyday use this computer will more than likely never go through any cpu intensive program but it will be on everyday as I have a big family.

And also im using the integrated graphics could that also heat it up more as when I used to use it I had a gpu paired with so maybe took of some of the stress?

Hi,

+1 Temps are fine.

My core i5 2500k would hit 80 degrees not overclock and lowered my voltage by .125 (because of crappy mobo) and now max temps are in the 60, so you could do that. Everything is stable even overclock at 4 ghz!

core i5 2500k are beasts !

54C core temperature for Youtube is somewhat odd considering how small a CPU load this should be but still perfectly safe since the maximum allowable junction temperature for Sandy Bridge is either 92C or 95C.

On my i5-3470, playing Youtube videos uses only ~8% of the CPU which isn't enough to bump speedstep off its 1.6GHz idle clock and the CPU stays under 45C while ambient temperature is 30C using the stock Intel HSF.

Verify how much of a CPU load Youtube puts on your CPU and if you see similarly low numbers, you might want to try re-attaching your HSF. If your CPU load is surprisingly high, you might want to investigate that first.

InvalidError hit the nail on the head. If it's running at 54C with YouTube I'd be a little worried about what it is like under load.

I'd guess the most likely culprit is the CPU heatsink needs to be reattached other wise maybe make sure the fan is spinning correctly and your case has decent ventilation.

Edit:
I forgot to mention, these other guys are right as well though. 54C isn't going to damage the CPU or anything.

Hello, I did run IBT 10 standard runs the hottest core got to 78 celsius after sixth pass then I stopped it and checked for real world usage temperature browsing youtube, facebook etc. Ambient temperature is 21 celsius mate

I know mate it's a bit out of the ordinary for just doing stuff like that, I don't know how much load it was putting on but i'll check and let you know and a virus is out of the question it's a brand new hard drive.

That certainly seems suspicious. You shouldn't reach anywhere close to 80C without overclocking if the HSF is working and attached properly with half-decent case airflow.

My checklist would be:
- check case filters
- check for dust clogging the heatsink
- check that all fans are working properly
- check that HSF is seated properly

Since the 9900 appears to screw into a motherboard backplate, it might need tightening or maybe paste replacement.
