Asus P9x79 PRO, will Caching work from a dynamic disk?? If so what ports are the ports that should be used. I have phoned Asus Tech several times. I have received different answers from each tech every time I called??? One said sata the other said ACHI mood, both said use different ports. I spend many hours, to no avail. You would think they would be trained enough to give a correct answer, Think Again. Thanks.

I would say both drives must be on intel controller ports, and ahci mode must be turned on for both drives I would think it would work on a dynamic disk just as well as a basic disk. the caching driver deos not care about the type of file system iirc

Whether your hard drive is partitioned as a Basic Disk or partitioned as a Dynamic Disk makes no difference with regards to SSD caching.

SATA ports can have 3 settings (modes): IDE, AHCI, & RAID.

You can connect your HDD & SSD to any SATA port on your motherboard, but in order to set up Intel caching the ports both drives are connected to have to be in RAID mode. For best performance it's best that you connect your drives to your motherboard's Intel SATA ports.

FYI, here's instructions on using Intel SRT: http://download.intel.com/support/chipsets/sb/intel_smart_response_technology_user_guide.pdf

Your motherboard manual will show you how to change SATA modes on your ports.

Thank you. I have an Asus P9X70 Pro mobo. It has a caching program, do you know if this would be better or worse than Intel. The manual is useless.
On Utube, the Asus tech makes it look so simple. I spent hours on it and could not succeed.

Intel SSD Caching has a capacity limitation of 64GB, so the largest SSD you can use is 64GGB. ASUS SSD Caching has no capacity limitation, so you can use any size SSD.

The instructions for ASUS SSD Caching start on page 4-16 of your motherboard manual:

1.) Shut down your pc and connect your HDD and SSD to Marvel SATA ports SATA6G_E1 & SATA6G_E2. See page 2-2 of your motherboard manual for the location of the ports.
2.) If you have not done so already, install Windows on your HDD.
3.) Install AI Suite II software from the support DVD that came with your motherboard. If you don't have the disk then download it from this link (under "Utilities"): http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P9X79_PRO/#support_Download_30
4.) Reboot pc and run AI Suite II
5.) Click "Tool", and then click "Caching Now!"

Once Status shows that initialization is complete you should be done.
Although it's probably not necessary, I would reboot the pc again after initialization is complete.

Thanks for your reply. I always get an error message what I run caching in AS II, using the caching ports. I downloaded the latest version from Asus.com. I can`t seem to work through this. I bought an SSD just for this purpose, caching. But you know that we just keep trying. If any other techs have any input...thanks in advance.

I would choose raid.. that will cover your bases. if it doesn't need raid, you can keep controller in raid mode and it automatically uses ahci anyway
