Windows is loading files

Hi folks,

Can someone explain what happens during the time that "Windows is loading files"? Where is it loading them to?

I ask because I get a BSOD every time, right afterwards at the splash screen, so as an experiment I disconnected the HD (and all possible drives) altogether, to see what the disc would do if it had nowhere to load files. Same BSOD. I really hope the Windows 7 disc isn't corrupt, it's the second one I've paid full price for.

Thanks for any thoughts!
Heather

Now, surely one of you experts knows what's going on during "Windows is loading files." What I want to do is reformat the HD, using the Windows 7 disc, but I can't get that far. So as an experiment I disconnected all drives and put the Windows 7 disc in... should I get a BSOD just because no drives are connected?

If you are trying to reinstall Windows you have to have at least one hard drive connected or else it has no where to install. Could you give more details on the BSOD you are getting? The more information you provide the better your chances are of getting the answer you need. "Windows is loading files" usually occurs when you are trying to install Windows. It is loading the files it needs to install Windows into memory (RAM).

Ah yes, sorry, my main thread is over in the Motherboards section, it's a long one. I was just trying to get a quick answer to a theoretical question... thanks for explaining, it loads it into the RAM!

I have one HDD connected and one CD/DVD drive connected. I'm trying to do a fresh install of Windows 7 on a new build. I was getting an APC_INDEX_MISMATCH error upon "Windows is loading files," but now I just get a Stop Error 0x0000001e. This also happens after "Windows is loading Files." I've changed out all RAM (even though it passed Memtest overnight) and have put just one new stick in, 1333 instead of 1600, in case that was it. Perhaps it was, since I don't get the APC Mismatch anymore. Now it's just the 0x0000001e.

I'll link to the other thread here, if you truly want to wade into it ;-) I've seen your posts before and you always have good answers. (If you do, I should mention that the BIOS flashing problem is resolved.)

Yes sir, I have read that, plus a few more helpful sites about that error... I'm trying to install on a 500GB WD Caviar Blue. I've tried a lot of other things since yesterday, including flashing the BIOS to F6 instead of F7, disabling all USB support, changing out all SATA power and data cables to the HDD and CD/DVD drive, plugging those drives into different SATA ports on the MB, changing IDE to ACHI, unplugging and replugging power to the MB and CPU, reseating the video card to a different PCIe slot, switching out for new RAM again (always one stick now--why complicate things?)... When loading a Windows 7 disc, I get the same errors after "Windows is loading files," sometimes I get to the logo screen--then either the Stop Error 0x0000001e, or the logo screen freezes with some graphics weirdness that looks like someone drew lines all around the Windows "flowers" with a crayon (which makes me suspect the video card). Upon loading a Linux ISO, just to try to run from the DVD, I get a Kernel Panic and a screen full of errors. Both the Linux ISO and the Windows 7 disc work fine on my good computer, so it's not the discs...

Do you know what controller the HDD is plugged into (Marvell or Intel or something else)? I only ask because when I first built my machine I had plugged the SSD into a Marvell controller and got random shutdowns and BSODs which was not solved until I used an Intel controller. I'm not sure any of that is relevant to your case.

Wow, I got excited when I read this post. I checked the MB, and the way this one works is that there are six SATA ports on the South Bridge, controlled by the AMD SB950 chipset. Those are the SATA ports I have been playing with (trying the optical drive and HDD in all configurations). There is indeed a Marvell controller, but it only controls a couple of eSATA ports on the back of the MB. So, alas, that is not it... excellent point though.
I have some parts coming in tomorrow and will try those (different video card, new *%^$#@ PSU, new optical drive).

I hope you get it solved. Please let me know if you do and how you did it.

I certainly will...thank you for the help!
