I need help choosing RAM. Requirements:
  • ■ 16GB
    ■ DDR3-1866
    ■ 240-pin DIMM
    ■ CAS latency of <9
    ■ Heat spreader
    ■ Preferably 2 modules but 4 is okay
The physical features are not very tall (ex: not like Corsair Vengeance). The CPU cooler is very wide and will be somewhat overtop of the RAM on the motherboard, so I need RAM sticks that don't have spikes or whatever decorative crap on top.
    ■ LGA1150 compatible

Solution

LGA 1150 is the latest socket and yes, I agree that the Ares memory was engineered towards LGA 1155 socket motherboards but that doesn't meant it will not work with others socket motherboards. The fact is that any DDR3 memory which matches the memory specification should work, theoretically. It won't be long before the manufacturers mention this in their memory sites.

Hello,:hello:
The memory which suits your requirements is Low-Profile memory and maybe you can go with ValueRAM (without heat spreader). CL9 or above is considered as the stable latency anything below CL9 can cause stability issues or sometimes compatibility issues. Yes, 2 x 8GB is the best way to go for 16GB of memory, this setup not only leaves extra slots for future upgrade but runs with less to the memory controller than the 4 x 4GB setup.

Check the following memory:
G.SKILL Ares Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) - F3-1866C10D-16GAB
Kingston Technology - HyperX 16GB DDR3 - KHX18C11P1K2/16
Kingston Technology HyperX Predator 16GB Kit (2 x 8GB) 1866MHz - KHX18C9T2K2/16X

Hope that helps

What CPU/mobo? and what cooler? If it's the 212 EVO or of the like the fan itself is adjustable...I ask about the CPU/mobo as not all can A) handle 1866 (many locked Intel and the majority of AMD CPUs) and the mobo can play in between a 2x8GB config and a 4x4GB config - have to keep in mind mobo advertising maight say 2400 but it depends on the CPU and it's MC (memory controller) - also not all mobos can take 8GB sticks

The G.SKILL Ares Series looks amazing but it's not for LGA1150. Sorry I forgot to mention that.

I don't want to run into any potential issues though especially since I probably wouldn't be able to afford another set in the event that it doesn't work out.

I could just move the fan up a bit on the radiator to give more room for Corsair Vengeance RAM. So pretty much I guess it's a choice of preference between Corsair Vengeance and G. Skill Ares. I'm leaning more towards the G. Skill since it appears that it's pretty fast and more satisfying for customers.
