I'm going to be building a new gaming computer this month and was looking at what's new and going on in the world of CPUs. One site I found stated that the Intel i5 3570 or 4570 with a powerful enough motherboard would process video as good as many independent graphics cards. This would certainly save on some of the cost of the computer but it just seemed like it couldn't be right. Any thoughts on the matter? Can I build a computer with a powerful motherboard and i5 4570 and without a graphics card that will still play games at a decent clip? Thanks!

Unless you are going play games at low resolution and medium or low graphic settings, then you are better off installing a graphics card. If you really want to rely solely on an integrated graphics cores, then look at either the AMD A10-5800k or A10-6800k which really isn't all that much better if you are looking to play games beyond low resolution. You know like at 1920x1080.

The Intel HD 4600's performance is generally equal to a desktop Radeon HD 55700 while the integrated Radeon HD 7660D / HD 8670D is the equivalent to a desktop Radeon HD 6670 DDR3. A Radeon HD 6670 with DDR3 however, only has about 74% the performance of a Radeon HD 6670 with DDR5. That places the performance half way between a Radeon HD 5570 and the Radeon HD 5670. Better than Intel without a doubt. But it does not make much difference if you want to play games at 1920x1080 with high quality graphics.

The following benchmarks are from the linked Anantech review at the end of this paragraph. Richland's integrated Radeon HD 8760D does not really off much improvement over Trinity's integrated Radeon HD 7660D since the benchmarks are very close to each other. So what is the difference? The Radeon HD 8760D officially supports DDR3 2133MHz RAM where as the Radeon HD 7660D only officially supports up to DDR3 1866MHz RAM. I believe most HD 7660D can use DDR3 2133MHz, but I have read some posts where DDR3 2133MHz would simply not work. In the benchmarks below both the Radeon HD 8760D and HD 7660D are using DDR3 2133MHz RAM.

I think if your RAM is 2133 or higher, The integrated Graphics from your i5 will produce more graphics....I just recently known that from Enhancing the Integrated graphics of AMD A10-6800k with faster ram. It appears to be that the integrated graphics Depends on your ram.

Others have already posted benchmarks comparing the Intel Iris graphics chip to dedicated graphics cards so I won't bother doing more of the same. One thing you need to keep in mind is that a dedicated graphics card means an extra investment of at least 200$ for anything worthwhile. I suggest you take a good read of Intel's page here since there are games that are optimized for the chip. I'll point out however that some of those benchmarks are misleading as they're tested on very high settings. The chip is certainly capable of playing a game at low to mid settings so if playing the game is more important than experiencing the minute details of the graphics, there's nothing wrong with Iris.

Intel HD graphics is generally not very sensitive to the speed of the RAM. I read a review where 2133MHz RAM was used instead of the standard 1600MHz (~ 33% increase) resulted in an average of 7% - 8% increase in performance.

:( I'm sorry, I'm just a beginner.

But here's my reference http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0Z7H1PYUkk .:)

If you are gaming you need a dedicated graphics card. No matter wht people say a dedicated gpu is needed to olay current gen games. Having a i5 or i7 will def not help in loading graphics faster for the game. That is the part for the gpu to perform. If you on a strict budget may I suggest the 7770 or 7790 for ato or 650ti boost for nvidia.

That's okay. Everyone needs to start somewhere and even so called "Experts" do not know everything either.

Regarding the video, generally everyone who follows integrated graphics performance closely knows that AMD's iGPU greatly benefits from faster RAM. In fact, the primary reason why Richlands' iGPU (Radeon HD 8670D) performs better than Trinity's iGPU (Radeon HD 7660D) is because the HD 8670D officially supports DDR3 2133MHz RAM whereas the HD 7760D only officially supports DDR3 1833MHz RAM. The HD 7660D can unofficially support DDR3 2133MHz though. When both the HD 8670D and HD 7660D are paired up with DDR3 2133MHz RAM the performance is pretty close, but the HD 8670 is marginally faster.
