HDD Wipe - Virus Present

I have a hard drive that I salvaged from an old laptop that I am going to use as extra storage in my new laptop, but I know for a fact that it has viruses. Is there a good way to wipe it without damaging my new laptop? Or better yet without even installing until it is wiped? And the previous laptop doesn't work so it can't be used to wipe it.

Take out your laptop hard drive that is currently in it now.

Install the virus infected hard drive, download Kaspersky rescue DVD. Run off the rescue dvd, do updates via the web and run a full scan.
That will clean out the infected hard drive.
