Are optical drives necessary?

I will be building a new computer in about a week, and one component in question is the optical drive. Music/movies, I stream online. Games, I download digitally. Drivers and software I download and I install OS's from a USB drive. I'd like to ask if there is a key use for the optical drive that I'm missing that would make me need it.

Not really. It's possible your new build won't be able to connect to the internet to download drivers after installation due to the lack of a LAN driver but you can put that on a flash drive from another PC. Aside from that, there's nothing that critically needs a DVD drive.

They are helpful, and I still use them from time to time. In case there's a problem (hopefully not) they can be used to boot diagnostic or other disks, though it should be possible to use USB sticks for that also.
