OK folks, after a few months of reading, reviewing, and waffling, I have come up with the following:

http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/18WY0

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor ($89.99 @ Newegg Canada)
Motherboard: ASRock 970 PRO3 R2.0 ATX AM3+ Motherboard ($74.99 @ Newegg Canada)
Memory: Crucial Ballistix 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory ($59.99 @ Newegg Canada)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($64.99 @ Newegg Canada)
Video Card: PowerColor Radeon HD 7770 GHz Edition 1GB Video Card ($89.99 @ NCIX)
Case: Xigmatek ASGARD PRO (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case ($44.99 @ Newegg Canada)
Power Supply: Corsair CX 500W 80 PLUS Bronze Certified ATX12V Power Supply ($64.99 @ Newegg Canada)
Optical Drive: Samsung SH-224BB/RSBS DVD/CD Writer ($15.99 @ Newegg Canada)

Keep in mind that these are all Canadian prices and retailers. I intend to buy the HD7770 from NewEgg Canada, but for some reason pcpartspicker is only showing GeForce cards for them? The price is the same.

Thoughts? Opinions? I am under a very tight, single parent budget here. I need a new rig, 'cause my boy keeps hogging my old AMD 3500+ (HD6570) to play Minecraft.

These days I mainly play DDO, but I would really like to get caught up on the FPS games that have come out in the last 3-4 years, and I really would like to play them on medium/high settings at the least.

I will need an OS; if you had a choice would you go with Win 7, or Win 8 for this little gamer?

Thanks!

No need for 8gb ram in a budget system just yet. 4gb is enough for most people, and RAM is the easiest thing to upgrade later anyway. I also swapped for a better PSU and a non-stressful case, a better motherboard with more features and a better VGA card for your rig:

As for OS, not a fan of Metro ( biggest joke from Microsoft IMO ) so I'd pick Windows 7.
