More about : picking ram
the max supported memory is 8GB ddr 333 ecc
The only problem is that ecc memory is very expensive and used mostly for servers.
What you want to do is search ebay for a used pack of 4x2gb ddr3 333 ecc ram
For example:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Server-RAM-8GB-4x-2GB-PC2700R-E...
Idk if your PC has sata, so here's a controller card:
http://www.amazon.com/Monoprice-4-port-Controller-Silic...
Other than that, you need a 64 bit operating system (windows 7 home premium 64 bit), and the best hdd option to extend the usefulness of your pc is a solid state drive plus a hard drive. Most people are surprised by the all around ssd performance.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0093HMKVI
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
Sorry for the delay, had to do research. Your PC is old and needs more than RAM

also is this ram ok to use http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/151064011630?ssPageName=STRK:...
and is this ok for my computer ? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/181161657530?ssPageName=STRK:...
32 bit operating systems only support up to 4GB and utilize 3.5Gb.
That's why you need the 64 bit version of windows, which supports much more RAM

That's not the 32Bit OS limit. It is memory limit for Windows in whole regardless of the OS version 32Bit or 64Bit.
Note: "**Capacities over 4-GB not supported under Windows XP or Windows 2000"
Yes, the memory is compatible and it should work fine. Since, you are going with higher speed memory (PC2700, 333MHz) I think you might need a BIOS update. Hope that clears your doubts.

what do you mean ? you have confused me, can i just buy the 8GB (4x 2GB) PC3200R DDR 400Mhz ECC Registered Server Memory RAM DIMM 184-Pin, and put them straight into the computer and it will work straight away ?

Look again, I've been referring to windows 7. Also, windows xp x64 does support up to 128GB of ram

PC2700 should work with a BIOS update but I cannot assure that for PC3200.

thanks for the help, is there a big difference bewteen 2700r and 2100r ?
No, the difference is not much but it is effective when you install only one speed in the all slots in that case PC2700 is better else there isn't much to separate.
is £12 a good price for 8GB (4x2GB) DDR 266 PC2100R ECC REG ?
