My wife's laptop frequently (several times per day) "loses" its supply from the power adapter. She'll be "plugged in" and the icon bottom right changes from A/C power/charged to battery/discharging. It gets sorted out simply by turning off at the mains, waiting a few seconds then turning on again. It's been gradually getting more frequent. Originally, it happened once or twice a week, now it's once or twice per day.

It's irritating, but I'm only bothered because it's obviously not supposed to do it and therefore an indicator that something else is wrong...

What's the most likely candidate, The adapter itself or the electronics inside the lappy? It's a Dell running XP Pro with the OEM power adapter...

The most likely suspect here would be the power jack inside the laptop. It is a common occurance especially if the laptop is charged often. There are services that will repair the power jack (or you can search for DIY repair if you are adept at soldering - youtube is full of vids for that - and aren't afraid of the laptop's innards)
