Hi fellow Tom's Hardware users,
I got a very peculiar problem. I have a Radeon HD 5870 just doesn't want to work. At first, it was a cooling problem, as the card would reach temps near 90 degrees celcius, so i fixed that. Now, I play all sorts of games, and even the least demanding (LoL and Minecraft) crash, even at lowest graphics. After about 10 minutes of playing, the screen will start to flicker (that's when I say oh crap ;) ) and then it will produce varicolored stripes (usually red and black or green and black). Then, either it will recover within a few seconds only to crash again soon after or my pc will just die completely and reboot.

So, its not a thermal problem *thanks to my fix card never goes above 55 degrees C

Its not a wattage problem, got a 700 watt high end PSU

no other component problems, dropped in my old 9500gt and pc ran fine.

So I am a little puzzled. I was reading on google that the 58xx series cards are known to be unstable (something about a Powerplay feature...)

Any help you could give would be nice, I don't really want to buy a new card quite yet.

Sounds like a GPU issue. Got a 5870 running on my GF's PC that I had on mine til I got a 7970 last year in January. Running great, even put an aftermarket cooler on it and runs like a dream. So im assuming your GPU is about to crap the bed, like it is already. If its under warranty RMA it. If not, replace it.

I probably should have added this, but it gets even more interesting...
Just played 2 hours straight of BF3 no problems whatsoever.
Yesterday, played 1 hour of TF2 with only 1 crash

Also, I am currently running driver version 13.4, but am also trying 13.6 beta.
