Recently, i started to build my computer. I ran into a problem that a cable labeled SATA would not entirely fit into my hard drive and my optical drive. They easily can
pulled without any force and only go about 1/3 into the slot.

Some SATA cables have a clip device that you need to press to open while sliding the cable on to the drive, then release when it's all the way home.

I hate to have to ask this but you do know they fit only one way around, I hope? Do the other ends make proper connections to the motherboard?

Oh no - never stupid. Caution is far better than brute force.

Computer parts are designed according to Murphy's Law of Aircraft Engineering which says "if something can be fitted the wrong way around, sooner or later, it will be", or similar. Therefore, an essential part which only works if fitted the right way round is forced in the wrong way, a plane/motor car/toaster/computer will fail and we all like our planes to stay up there until they're supposed to come down.

You rarely find stupid people here at Tom's - they stay isolated and try to fix things without help.
