I recently bought an old DVD Drive at a garage sale. I plan on putting this drive into the next computer that I build. But the problem is I don't know if it is working. I Don't want to wait until I put it into the computer to see if it works, so are there any ways that I could some how test its functionality?

Put it in a computer and see if it works. You should only have to connect the sata and power, you don't actually have to mount it in the case.

Does it look broken? If not it will probably work. I've only had one DVD drive go bad, it was close to 10 years old at the time, the others I have ever dealt with have seen similar or longer life spans without failures. Somehow DVD drives keep chugging along forever, not really sure why or how.

As for checking it, do you have a desktop currently? If so just leave the side panel off, hook up a data and power connection to the new drive and see if it can read a disc. If you don't have a desktop you can test it in, there isn't a way to test it, but i wouldn't really worry about it, DVD drives are quite cheap these days.
