Hello,

I have been holding off on my new build because the two new generations of graphics cards are coming out soon, the GTX 700 series and the HD 8000 series. I have been doing some research and it looks like the 8000 series is OEM only, I don't really have time to wait for the 9000 series because I want to get everything ordered within the next month or so.

I am debating between the 7970 Ghz edition (last generation), and the 770 (Just released). I read the 7970 might be a little better, but I plan on using the new card for a long time, so I don't want to buy one all ready from the last generation. Witch one should I pick?

Any suggestions are welcome, even for another similarly priced card.

Edit: Also, I am not really into violent shooting games, mostly simulation games like Roller Coaster Tycoon 3, SimCity, Dirt 3.

Solution

Correction: Has issues when CrossFired. You can still do it (I do), but you will run into issues, and you won't get as much performance as you would like. That said, the recent 7990 article confirmed that AMD is working on a solution to the CrossFire micro stutter issue.

Overall, I would recommend the 770 over the 7970, unless you would otherwise purchase the games from the game bundle separately. I just wanted to clarify that CrossFire, though very buggy, is not utterly infeasible and that the current issues may be resolved.
