EAP-SIM authentication on WiFi hotspot

Been given 10GB free wifi by service provider and their outlets/call centre can't tell me how to use it. As far as I can work out, I need to use EAP-SIM authentication and I can only find info on how to use it for EAP phones. I have a Huawei E173 dongle (apparently EAP capable) and an Intel 3945 wireless network card. I can configure the card to use EAP but don't have any clue as to how to get it to get the necessary data from the SIM Card for authentication. Anybody have any clue how to do that?

You don't use your SIM card for the wifi connection, unless you are talking about a cellular data connection. Some people use wifi and cell data plans as the same, they are not. If you got a data plan for the phone, they need to provision the phone to connect to their data service, there is nothing you can do unless they configure it. If it's WiFi, that does not use EAP-SIM, that is for a GSM data connection.

Stevew : I'm working on the same problem. I'm guessing you are referring to 8.ta. For a laptop, you are supposed to log onto the portal and register your MAC address instead, but this only works if you have a contract, not pre-pay.

There must be some way using a replacement Wi-fi driver (supplicant) plus a smart card reader, but haven't figured this out yet.

Let me know if you find a solution.

Hang-the-9 is probably well meaning, but way off base.

This sevice is NOT WiFi, it's a data connection through the Cell network, which means he has to get the card or phone registered though the service provider to provition the data service. Unless the company is run out of the back of a truck with people they randomly pulled off the street, their support should be able to set up the connection. If anything, you may have to use their hardware instead of the Huawei card.

The Intel WiFi card will have nothing to do with this connection.

The OP clearly states that he has been given "10Gb of free wifi" and that he needs to use EAP SIM authentication to access it.

I'm guessing that he's referring to Telkom Mobile in South Africa (but could be Free in France or others).

This is NOT mobile data. It is WiFi offered by the network operator through a separate WiFi network of hotspots but authenticated using your SIM card.

Unless his 3g dongle specifically can talk to the wifi stack on his wifi card to share the authentication data, he wont be able to do this directly.

You can add any WiFi device to the system by adding its MAC address to the 8ta website as suggested above. This eliminates the need for EAP-SIM setup. Of course you can only add one device per contract. Setting up Android, Applle and Blackberry phones with EAP-SIM are provided for by the 8ta website but not for Windows Phones. This is my problem, BTW. So far adding my Lumia 920's MAC address is the only way to use the Free WiFi.

After months of research I found a solution but had to buy a. Samsung s2 from Gumtree now I always finish my 10 GB Free 8.ta wifi using my Samsung s2 on Ics 4.1.2 from FreeMobile downloaded from sammobile.com. I connect using the phone then use a USB cable to tether the network from the phone to the laptop . I get downloading speeds of about 1.5mb/s on Internet download manager. Hopefully this will help someone.
