Before I start, let me say upfront, I'm a noob at this.

I recently came into possession of a gatway GT5656

AMD Athlon™64 X2 6000+, 64-bit dual core processor
3gb RAM
Integrated NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE graphics 128mb shared memory
300w power supply

I'd like to upgrade the video card (I know it's integrated, but I read if I have a pcie 16x port I could put a new card in, please correct me if I'm wrong) I'm also looking to get a better power supply 500w-600w, and add more RAM, If I have enough left over I'll try and find a better processor.

Having very little knowledge with this kind of thing, I was wondering if I could ask for the communities suggestions. What's a decent graphics card between $100-$200? Are there any recommended power supplies? and what's a good processor in the $100-$200 range? Is it even worth it to try and build something out of this?

Thanks!

Upgrading can be an option. You want to get the processor and the GPU at the same time, or you would have a lot of bottlenecking (This is when one component is too powerful for another, hindering it's capabilities). I do not know what socket your motherboard is (A socket is what the CPU goes into), but assuming if it's AM2 (An old socket no CPUs are made for anymore) you should get a cheap 75$-100$ AM3+ motherboard (This would be futureproof) and get the Phenom II Black Edition for 100$. For a GPU get the GTX 660 for ~200$ (you really ought to spend the most on the GPU).

What I would do is if the case can take an atx or mid size atx mb I would reuse the case and drives if there Sata drives. A good 500w ps on sale is 40-60 from newegg (cosair power supply's). A good mid range gpu is the new 650 gpu from nvidia. A cheaper card would be the 7770 or the 7790.
And i3 any h61 motherboard would run you 150. Newegg also has a good amount of combo and DIY pc kits. The older DDR-2 ram on older pc is very costly.

i agree what is posted above, i have an athlon x2 5200 and it bottlenecks any decent card. It bottlenecked my old 9800gtx but that could have been due to only having 2gb of ram, played better with more as well as having a nice overclock on the cpu to help. Honestly the only thing id consider reusing is the case and maybe the hdd. hopefully you have a 7200rpm drive atleast.
