Hi,

Trying to build a budget HTPC AM3+ system with intention of supporting some old(ish) games (Fable III / GTA:SA / Possibly Fifa 13 etc)

Most of my bits will be sourced 2nd hand to keep costs down. Intent on buying a separate GPU at a later date to run games; so initially looking for a board with HDMI out for the HTPC.

CPU will most likely be one of the following

- Phenom II X4 840
- Athlon II X4 645
- Athlon II X4 640

Contenders below:

GIGABYTE GA-78LMT-USB3
GIGABYTE GA-880GM-USB3
Asus M5A78L-M/USB3
BIOSTAR A880GZ

Anyone know of any other boards, be it discontinued or not that I could try to source?

Thanks in advance.

edit: Found a couple more..
GIGABYTE GA-MA785GMT-UD2H
MSI 880GM-E41
Asus M4A88T-M

Solution
IMO GIGABYTE GA-78LMT-USB3 is really the best here. Not that strong of an IGP, but you're going to upgrade to a discrete VGA card after all. It has all the good things that the boards in your list can offers:

- USB3 ports
- Full support for AMD FX CPUs to upgrade later.
- HDMI output.

And few things that only this board has, like:

- Front usb3.0 header to use with new cases.
- Heatsink over VRM to ensure system's stability ( and even light overclocking ).

In case you need more audio outputs and don't feel like upgrading to a FX cpu later then GA-880GM-USB3 is also a strong candidates, but it's almost out of stock now.

Other boards don't have big pluses like the 2 mentioned above to be taken into consideration.

Integrated graphics? You mean like fm2? (it's been 5years since built a pc, playing catch up!)

Just going for those chips as they still perform better than the lowest fx chips. The fx4300 looks tempting though..

Thanks, was the front runner for me too..

The OP intends to get a strong GPU later to run heavy games, so :bounce: A budget AM3+ system makes a good base than an Intel one at this price point ( probably an i3 or Pentium as the CPU ) after all.

Just bought a GIGABYTE GA-78LMT-USB3 for £25.. Only just noticed the max tdp is 125w, just assumed it to be 95w. Will probably do a bit more research into the fx cpu's.
