I have a dell Optiplex and the other day it froze, and shut off. when rebooted it showed the windows XP loading bar as usual and then gave me a blue screen of death. Saying [unmountable boot drive] so I rebooted it a few times and still got the same result. From research I have done I have discovered this usually is the sign that the hard drive is either dead or the operating system is badly damaged. I ran Windows XP Recovery and did CHKDSK and nothing was found, I put in new Boot sectors still no luck. There was nothing important on the system, I am considering installing a new hard drive with a fresh installation of windows XP. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated thank you!! patstormchaser123,

Have you tried doing a complete fresh install of Windows XP? If you cannot do that successfully, then you should consider a new hard drive.

Another thing to keep in mind is the upcoming Windows XP End of Support date, which is April 8, 2014. If you meet the system requirements, it is strongly recommended that users make the move to a modern operating system such as Windows 7 or Windows 8 by then. This Springboard Blog post covers more about what end of support means and what you can do to prepare.
