I started playing Bioshock yesterday and it had all been going really well except for the few times my keyboard stopped working (which happens sometimes since it's a cheap USB keyboard), and then today Bioshock froze and crashed to the desktop. This happened several times over the course of about 30 minutes until instead of crashing my screen would turn blue or purple or orange and then crash to the desktop. When it turned orange, my computer crashed as well. Now that I've turned it back on, my resolution is shot so I figured it was a gpu problem. I installed GeForce Experience which updates drivers and such and it doesn't read the gpu. Just checked Device Manager for my GTX 660 and it says "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems (Code 43)". What happened and what should I do?

The driver is probably corrupt. Uninstall the drivers & install fresh, this :320.18 http://www.nvidia.com/object/win8-win7-winvista-64bit-3...

I uninstalled and then installed the newest drivers from NVIDIA and then again from GeForce, then I uninstalled those after it didn't work and installed the original ones from the cd rom that comes with it. My gpu still shows up with a code 43, what should I do?

Test the card on another machine. If it works there, you have a software issue/conflict.

okay I put it in another computer that doesn't have a gpu and as soon as it booted (before any drivers were installed) the resolution was worse than before. Does that mean I have a dead card?

The test computer will need the drivers to test/work.

I installed the latest drivers and still got a code 43 on the test computer. It's a hardware problem right?

If there is no warranty or RMA period left.
I do not know your brand but most if not all offer 2 years limited some 3 years

Alright, thanks for helping me. I got the gpu 7 months ago anyways, so I should be able to get a replacement. Also, do you think it could've been because of the game?

No, there are more intense gpu heavy load games and the 660 does great with them. Hardware problem internal.

Your welcome & let us know how it goes.:p

Are you had installed GeForce Experience before playing Bioshock? Which version of driver was previously in the system?

Never update your video drivers with GeForce Experience, it never goes well.
Instead Select & download, save & run the driver from here~ http://www.geforce.com/drivers.
It will install completely with no problems. The GfEx is good for "new version is available notifications" ONLY.

Finally, I checked in with an old driver version 258.96 (with old installation wizard) and does not display CODE 43 in Device Manager with low-res desktop. But now its does artifacting on desktop! I try with the thermal compound (the recommendation to take the heatsink of the card, remove any remains of old thermal paste and clean the GPU and heatsink contacts properly and apply a fresh layer of thermal paste). I conclude from this that the new versions of drivers are with the built-in diagnostics for health of card and any type of error happens it reports CODE 43 to stop the operation of the device. I think this is generally in response to all of the same problem-HARDWARE MALFUNCTION:sarcastic:

Hi. A bit of advice - don't expect help or useful answer from support. I don't want to insult anyone, people from support just tend to not provide any useful help at all. I am owner of laptop with HUGE issues. And had to ask for support microsoft, asus, nvidia and etc. None of them provide me any that i can rely on it. 4 months now ... Now back to the problem - if you encounter a code 43 on GTX GPU, the most simple and most reliable soluton is to flash your BIOS. I had this issue 3 times now on diferent laptops and desktops. Before you go for driver change, providing you had it worked before and sudenly this error ocure - just flash the bios. More often this will do the trick. On my asus woth GTX 760M - yes the notorius problematic gpu it worked fine on 2 different laptops.
Hope this will be uselfull to anyone. And remeber - to call the supprot is simply wate of time and nerves. They more often just pass the ball from amnufacturer to manufacturer.
