CPU Temp Question

I have an AMD Phenom X4 that I recently checked the temperature on. I am curious if 83C/181F temp is too high for a machine now idle, but 10 minutes ago playing an MMO game.

I read a bunch of articles online, even some from this website and I still do not have the answer I am looking for, for my specific CPU.

Well for a phenom II anything under 85-90 is "safe" but definitely not desirable. I am currently not satisfied with 55C on my rig. I would completely recommend getting a new cpu cooler for that rig. Here you have a choice, liquid or air. Liquid performs better, but is more expensive and is really only needed if you OC or have extreme temps, like yours. Something like the corsair H60 or thermaltake water 2.0 extreme would cool the best out of anything, but are very pricey. If you dont want to spend that much or prefer air cooling the coolermaster hyper 212 evo is one of the best air coolers and is a very good price.

Thank you for your suggestions, I will be looking up the coolermaster later to see how much they cost. I did just take the side off my tower to check the CPU fan and the heat sink is loaded with dust so I think its time to clean it out first and see how it does.
