Hello,

My desktop has hit a point where I think it's going a little slow, so I decided to overclock it but I am completely new about it. Now I did read up couple posts and researched about it and I know a tiny bit about it but I still hope you experts could help me out.

My set up is:

MB: GA P31 DS3L (I read reviews about it being a good board to OC)
CPU: E6550 2.33Ghz
GC: Gigabyte 8600 GTS 256 MB
RAM: OCZ Reaper HPC CL4 DDR2 4-4-4-15 2T (2.1V) 2 x 1GB
POWER: Cooler master 650W
OS: Windows XP home edition 32 bit

Air cooled and good flow.

So any of you can provide some detailed responds on what numbers should I oc? I'm looking for a steady, mild OC that would give me 2.8Ghz maybe? I heard that it could be OC to 3+ no problem, can anyone justify that?

Also what are some important things I need to be aware of?

Do I OC it at the bios or would some software work better? Any Risks?

ps. I do have CPUID and CPU-Z installed and running.

on a separate note, I am getting new ram, looking into 8GB (2x4GB) but im not sure if it is okay with my setup? Like will my setup support it and use all 8GB ?

and can anyone recommend some mid range rams for me to look at?

I would love you to death if anyone can help me out!

Thanks in advance! :D
Feel free to ask me anything in order for you to help!

hi, thanks for the help, cooling is good on my computer, my cpu/ gpu at normal use is about 30-40 degree max, when i game and such it goes to 60 max but im about to change up the old fans so it will decrease, and i just checked, my board doesnt support more than 4 gbs of ram (pout) so I will get 4GB of good ram i suppose!

On a sidenote, I was thinking of replacing my 8600GTS to a 8800GTS, since is about 30 bucks on ebay anyways, any suggestions on video card? and the brand too? I'm thinking of XFX 8800GTS.

Thanks again guys!

with 32 bit OS, no way to use more than 4GB
I don't know where you live, but here we cant find DDR2 RAM anymore
Overclock on the BIOS, overclock by software (we call On-The-Fly) are not stable and everytime you start your system you will need to apply the OC.

1st Disable EIST, C1E, and C2E on Bios, this will make your CPU run at full clock all the time.
2nd Try to raise your FSB a little, some OCers, say raise 5 by 5 MHz, but at this point you can raise 33 one time.

if i'm not wrong your CPU are FSB 1333 (333MHz clock) * 7 = 2331 MHz, jumping to 366 you will get 2562.

Put vcore in stock (or manual and input the stock vcore) no auto setting
Put RAM clock in manual too and don't overclock him for a start

sorry about my english im brazilian

you NEED to purchase an aftermarket cooler before overclocking, doesn't matter what your temps are now.

Hey Luiz, thanks for the reply, I'm in canada but I can get DDR2 stuff in Hong Kong so no problem, digging into OCZ rams. and pm me so we can talk outside of this and maybe you can walk me through?

My friend said he's going to get me a 8800GTX so its good, i got the graphics card covered :D

and to Daswilhelm, I do have an aftermarket cooler, might get a zalmann later on.

below is a picture of the readings, hope it could help. http://i43.tinypic.com/jtqazr.jpg

update: might not get the 8 series anymore since its so old, looking at GTX 650

G31 motherboards are not good for overclocking.
However, you should still be able to get 350 fsb..
To really overclock, you need: p35/p45/x38/x48

thanks , but my point is not whether its good for overclocking or not, point is, somethings preventing me to overclock, and there are lots of people with the same board and chip and went up to 3.4 no problem :( idk whats going on.....

haha youre still focusing on my cooler....this guy clocked the same setup to 3.0 with stock cooler and he was fine, only when its up to 3.4 it got too hot, definitely not the cooler, but it is an evercool buffalo one, and now i know people have different opinions about it but I build this rig 5 years ago with a budget so thats why i didnt go for some nice ones, but this does the job pretty well :)

well you never did tell us what cooler you had. kinda hard to assess the situation based off of guess's. anyway, not all chips like an overclock, and your c2d fsb is already at 1333, other c2d's that run with a lower fsb can be oc'd a lil easier than yours. if you've seen other people that have had luck with your exact setup, you might want to ask them what they did to make it work.

Does your board have jumpers?
Idk..I'm running a g41 board right now..with a Yorkfield..It maxes out @ 350 fsb
I just bought it to piddle.

I mean..It overclocks..up to 350 fsb,then there's a hard wall there.I have to move jumpers to adjust the RAM
With a different board..the chip will do much more.
