so there is a laptop with 6gb of ram (1x4gb + 1x2gb) 1600mhz ddr3. the processor is i5 3230m. my question is, will this ram setup run in asynchronous dual channel mode?

Solution

It will run in Flex mode. This is true for most of all the recent motherboards but i'm unsure if it is the same for the laptops.

Flex mode results in both dual- and single- channel operation across the whole of DRAM memory.
The 2 GB DIMM in slot 1/2 and the lower 2 GB of the DIMM in the slot 1/2 operate together in dual-channel mode. The remaining (upper) 2 GB of the DIMM in Slot 1/2 operates in single-channel mode.

Hope that answers your question. Cheers!!

Thank you very much. I think it works similarly for laptops also. So I guess, applications using below 4gb ram will run in dual channel mode. But if they use above 4gb, will all of the used ram run in single channel or will it still be 4gb dual and the rest in single? And will there be any noticeable performance drop in comparison to full dual channel, during regular use or gaming?
